Partially protected areas as a management tool on inshore reefs

چکیده

Partially Protected Areas (PPAs) are a widely-used management tool, yet comparatively little is known about their effectiveness compared to more commonly studied No-Take Marine Reserves (NTMRs). Here, we examine the efficacy of two kinds PPAs (with and without spearfishing) within Great Barrier Reef Park (GBRMP) that subject range fishing limitations, assess utility as marine park zoning fisheries tool. Fish abundance, size, habitat composition were inside NTMRs on inshore reefs central GBR. abundances lower relative adjacent for primary targets, with no detectable effects secondary targets non-targets, or species richness. assemblages differed amongst zones, but these variations minor regional in composition. supported 46%–69% abundance total NTMRs, evident increase zones where spearfishing was prohibited. There reductions size key target species: coral trout (Plectropomus spp.) stripey snapper (Lutjanus carponotatus) PPAs, only had significant NTMRS. Habitat biophysical characteristics (especially topographic complexity) strong drivers fish influence zone greater non-targets. This study provides novel data highlights spatial tool contributing conservation goals.

Optimising Land-Sea Management for Inshore Coral Reefs

Management authorities seldom have the capacity to comprehensively address the full suite of anthropogenic stressors, particularly in the coastal zone where numerous threats can act simultaneously to impact reefs and other ecosystems. This situation requires tools to prioritise management interventions that result in optimum ecological outcomes under a set of constraints. Here we develop one su...

Marine Protected Areas as a tool for fishery management and ecosystem conservation: an Introduction

This special issue of the ICES Journal of Marine Science is dedicated to Marine Protected Areas (MPAs) and presents a range of papers from the “European Symposium on Marine Protected Areas as Tool for Fisheries Management and Ecosystem Conservation”. This introduction provides a brief overview of key points from presentations, and discussions, and two science-policy roundtable sessions. The sym...

Coral Reefs on the Edge? Carbon Chemistry on Inshore Reefs of the Great Barrier Reef

While increasing atmospheric carbon dioxide (CO2) concentration alters global water chemistry (Ocean Acidification; OA), the degree of changes vary on local and regional spatial scales. Inshore fringing coral reefs of the Great Barrier Reef (GBR) are subjected to a variety of local pressures, and some sites may already be marginal habitats for corals. The spatial and temporal variation in direc...

North East Atlantic vs. Mediterranean Marine Protected Areas as Fisheries Management Tool

The effectiveness of management initiatives implemented in the context of the European Common Fisheries Policy has been questioned, especially with regard to the Mediterranean. Some of the analyses made to compare the fishing activity and management measures carried out in the North East Atlantic and in the Mediterranean do not take into account some of the differentiating peculiarities of each...

Marine protected areas and ocean basin management

1. All reserve designs must be guided by an understanding of natural history and habitat variability. 2. Differences in scale and predictability set aside highly dynamic pelagic systems from terrestrial and nearshore ecosystems, where wildlife reserves were first implemented. Yet, as in static systems, many pelagic species use predictable habitats to breed and forage. Marine protected areas (MP...
